Notion Custom Domain for Client Portals: What You Can (and Cannot) Do

Agencies want a URL like clients.studio.com, not a random Notion share link. “Notion custom domain” searches usually mix three products: Notion Sites, Notion-to-website builders, and true client portals. They look similar in a screenshot. They are not the same for multi-client security.

Notion Sites and custom domains

Notion’s own site publishing can put selected pages on a custom domain. That is ideal for marketing sites, docs, and public resources. It is still a published site model: you are not getting per-client authentication and row-level scoping out of the box.

Notion site builders (Super, Sotion, and similar)

These tools polish Notion pages into websites with themes and custom domains. They shine for blogs, portfolios, and documentation. For client portals, ask the hard question: does each client authenticate as themselves, and are records scoped server-side? If the answer is “shared page with a password” or “public site,” you still have a website, not a multi-client portal.

Portal products with custom domains

A portal layer keeps Notion as the database and serves a branded app on your domain. Clients log in with magic links. Each session is tied to an identity, and data is filtered before it reaches the browser. On Portalize, custom domains are an Agency-plan feature; lower plans still support branding (logo and colors) on the hosted portal URL.

  • Custom domain = trust and brand continuity for clients.
  • Branding without a domain is often enough while you validate the workflow.
  • Domain alone does not create security — auth + scoping do.

Practical recommendation

Use Notion Sites or a site builder when the audience is public. Use a portal product when multiple clients need private, scoped access to live project data. Add the custom domain when you are ready to white-label the experience end-to-end.

Start on a free branded portal, then add a custom domain when you upgrade to Agency.
